Just a couple of days later of it's anniversary, and because I like some history lessons. Let's see how many of you know about this:
April 21st, 1980. The 84th Boston Marathon took place, just to be remembered by one specific thing......Rosie Ruiz, a Cuban American woman gets first to the Finish Line, being declared the winner by an OUTSTANDING time of 2:31:56 (surprinsingly, WAY lower than her results to qualify for the Marathon, which was 2:56:29). A time enough to consider her the 3rd fastest female runner ever recorded.
Now, here is were the suspicion comes:
Non of the runners could recall seeing her during start line, nor photographers or monitors in checkpoints. Jackie Gareau, who was leading the race with 18 miles to go, as expected, could not recall seeing Ruiz passing her, nor Patti Lyons who was the 2nd place at the moment. Also, they noticed that she was not panting or coated in sweat as a real runner who had run such distance.....and, one of the funniest ones, her thighs looked fatter than a recognized world-class runner capable to finish in such time record. To add the cherry on top of the cake, some members of the crowd stated seeing her jump into the race during its final half-mile, and of course, she later released stress-test results showing her resting heart rate as 76 (Usually, heart rates after such exercise should in 50s or lower).
Well, as expected and due to all investigations and evidences, later that week, The Boston Athletic Association disqualified Rosie Ruiz and declared Jacqueline Gareau the real winner (with a REAL time record, by that time, of 2:34:28), and Patti Lyons the 2nd place (with a time of 2:35:08, also considered one of the fastest at that time).
34 years after the event, believe it or not, Ruiz still holds that she ran the whole course.
